The MQB platform in the Golf R can generate huge amounts of power—and there’s an almost 30% increase to be had when you start making alterations to intakes, exhausts, intercoolers and software. But with such an intense focus on these areas as a way of improving your engine output, it’s easy to forget about the factory water cooling system.
And that makes sense. It often seems like a far less exciting prospect than what can be achieved with intakes, exhausts, intercoolers and software. And it’s also not often very visible either.
So it may seem like a boring part of your car that doesn’t really deserve much attention. But the truth is that without a good water cooling system in place, you’re missing out on potential gains.
The factory radiator on the Golf R is often found to be struggling to remove heat from the engine coolant and exhaust gas heat. Commonly, logged temperatures are found to be much higher than are indicated by the dashboard gauge – with an increase of +20c being common.
High engine oil temperature is also experienced during spirited driving, as there is no oil cooler fitted to the Golf R as standard. This means that the already-stressed water radiator has more work to do than it was designed for.
- 1-row 26mm core
- single-pass
- 7mm fin height
Our high performance solution for the Golf R radiator is a direct replacement for the OEM item. It has been designed to improve the cooling efficiency of the stock radiator meaning your car will run cooler, both on and off track.
A single row, 26 mm core is used in the OEM radiator which is of a single pass design. This is a very thin core which does not make use of the available space efficiently, contributing to the cooling issues that can be experienced when running at high throttle on track.
After months of development, we have developed a solution which maximises the efficiency and surface area of the space available whilst maintaining all of the factory mounting locations, hose locations etc for a direct replacement part. Our specification is below…
CSF’s All-Aluminium Triple Pass Water Radiator
- 2-row 42mm B-tube core
- Triple-pass design
- 6.5mm fin height
This radiator utilises a 2-row, 42mm core and maximizes the space between the condenser and radiator to make the product more efficient. The B-tube design makes the tubes stronger than 0-tubes and increases surface area inside the tube by 15% over 0-tubes.
The Triple Pass design means coolant passes across the core three times before it exits, which maximises the time that radiator has to exchange heat for a cooler outlet temperature. Finally, the 6.5mm fin height was wind tunnel optimised in CSF’s in-house wind tunnel, leaving no stone unturned in the pursuit of optimal performance.
